Toxic Gas Shelter - ChemSAFE Utility Design
Toxic Gas Shelter solutions for petrochemical facilities offer a safe and secure ‘go-to’ area for multiple personnel in the event of a toxic chemical release or other hazardous emergency response scenario.
The ChemSAFE Utility Design (UD) Toxic Gas Shelter features a narrow construction for space restricted chemical applications. Constructed from robust 4.75mm (3/16″) steel plate, the safe haven’s portable design features lifting lugs and forklift slots, allowing easy manoeuvrability around petrochemical facilities.
The steel structure of the ChemSAFE Utility Design Safe Haven is fully sealed, offering 0% air change per hour (ACH) for long term occupancy in a toxic gas release. Standard configurations are available based on occupancy – from 6 to 30 people- however dimensions and rated occupancy can be custom-engineered to ensure the shelter is suitable for your facility.

Safe Haven Exterior – Front View
The ‘face’ of the safe haven is designed primarily for easy identification and quick access during an emergency.
The strobe lighting, warning siren and reflective signage alert passers-by to the safe haven’s location, whilst the rotating door handles provide simple, straight forward access to the safety of the interior.
An additional feature of the ChemSAFE Utility Design Toxic Gas Shelter range is a fully pressurised vestibule, providing added protection against the ingress of smoke and other harmful toxins. Vestibules are available as either an internal or external feature of the safe haven. See further on for additional information.
Extra low voltage green and red LED lighting and 112 dBA motion activated siren to allow for easy identification of the safe haven in an emergency.
12mm porthole viewing window, compliant with Australian Standard 2208. Blast shield protection available upon request.
Push button and timed.
Outward opening door, featuring double locking rotating handles. The vacuum tested seal maintains a positive internal pressure.

Safe Haven - Interior View
Inside a ChemSAFE Utility Design Safe Haven, a number of vital life-support systems combine to create a safe, ongoing environment for occupants. Systems include; air (oxygen) supplies, air conditioning and dehumidifying, positive pressure systems, electrical and communications, gas detection and carbon dioxide removal.
MineARC’s ELV (extra-low-voltage) System comes as standard with the ChemSAFE Utility Design. The ELV Control System can be installed in conjunction with an optional UPS battery backup that can power the system for a minium of 12hrs, should mains power be cut off.
Air conditioning is vital to combat the potentially fatal effects of heat stress, caused by the occupant’s metabolic activity, as well as any ambient heat.
Operating procedures are located on the wall of the refuge chamber, as well as within hardcopy manuals. Operating procedures can be translated into a second language.
MineARC seating is ergonomically designed to provide suitable comfort during entrapment. Made from durable, hard wearing fabric, the seating provides 500mm of space per person.
Real-time gas monitoring with live analysis and voice prompting. Monitor up to 11 gases at any one time.
MineARC’s MARCISORB CO2 cartridges provide superior scrubbing capacity, are easy to load, safe to handle, and can store for long periods.
The ChemSAFE UD uses active chemicals and MineARC’s extra-low-voltage (ELV) scrubbing system to ‘scrub’ the build up of harmful CO2 from the safe haven.
The digital controller interface is the operational hub of the safe haven. From here, all power, lighting & scrubbing systems can be managed with the push of a button.
Non slip, removable flooring is featured throughout the refuge chamber.
Safe Haven Exterior - Rear View
The rear of the ChemSAFE Utility Design houses important electrical and backup power supply systems. An optional feature of the toxic gas shelter is a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) battery backup system, contained within a secure rear cabinet. The UPS is a failsafe system that can power the safe haven’s internal life support systems for a minimum of 12hrs, should mains power become cut-off.
Communications box for internal communications port via wall mounted ‘J’ box. External antenna is fitted to front of chamber.
Air conditioning is vital to combat the potentially fatal effects of heat stress, caused by the occupant’s metabolic activity, as well as any ambient heat.
36 hour emergency backup power supply, with further options available for up to 96 hours (POA).
