Cyclone Shelter - StormSAFE
The StormSAFE Cyclone Shelter for extreme weather conditions has been built to comply with the Australian Building Code’s ‘Region D Rating’ for tropical cyclones, and the Australian & New Zealand Standard AS/NZ1170.2, with a Building Code of Australia Importance Level of 4. The StormSAFE Cyclone Shelter has been engineered to withstand wind speeds in excess of 300km/hr and can be used to shelter personnel from cyclones, hurricanes and other extreme weather scenarios.
The StormSAFE Cyclone Shelter features a fully portable, modular design; comprising either stand alone, above-ground shelters or a series of individual units that bolt together, creating a single internal environment. The design allows for easy disassembly and relocation as required.
The StormSAFE Cyclone Shelter is available in two standard lengths; a short 6m design for up to 12 persons per module, and a longer 12m chamber for up to 24 persons per module. A combination of end, centre or stand-alone modular units are utilised to create the most suitable solution for each client’s requirements.
The MineARC StormSAFE Cyclone Shelter is designed to house any size team comfortably; offering bunk-style bedding, ample seating, kitchenette facilities and toilet ammenities. Its clever modular design means that space can be customised for any specification, particularly in regards to size, occupancy and internal features.
The StormSAFE Cyclone Shelter is a cost-effective above ground shelter option for remote industrial sites, allowing personnel to remain on-site to continue production right up to a ‘blue’ alert. For sites experiencing regular extreme weather conditions, such as cyclones or hurricanes, this minimises costly downtime and process disruptions significantly.

Cyclone Shelter – Front View
MineARC Engineers have utilised flow simulation software to accurately analyse the flow path of cyclonic wind from all directions acting on the StormSAFE Cyclone Shelter. By determining the areas of positive and negative pressures caused by air passing over the geometry, our engineers were able to develop a chamber design that is both stable and self-weighting, whilst also remaining easily transportable. FEA structural analyses have been conducted to determine the maximum deflection of the StormSAFE shelter, ensuring the impact energy of flying debris during a cyclone will not allow the shell to yield.
The StormSAFE’s AS 2428.1/2 compliant ventilation system provides effective, natural air flow, whilst ensuring optimal protection in even the most extreme weather conditions.
